Bookstats 2013, the U.S. Publishing Industry's Definitive Annual Survey, To Offer Analysis by Outsell; Bowker Renewed for Statistical Results
New York, NY, February 21, 2013 – Production is now underway on the 2013 edition of BookStats, recognized as the most comprehensive survey of the size and scope of the US publishing industry, it was announced by the Association of American Publishers and the Book Industry Study Group. BISG and AAP, the survey’s co-producers, also announced that Outsell, the leading research and advisory firm for the information and publishing industries, has joined the project to provide editorial analysis and Bowker, a premier source of market research on publishing and books in all formats, will again produce the extrapolated results.
The first BookStats deadline – the due date for publisher submissions – is February 28.
Outsell will analyze the overall figures and write the extensive editorial text accompanying the aggregated data results. “We’re delighted to have Outsell join the BookStats team,” said Len Vlahos, Executive Director, BISG. “BookStats’ analytical component is very important to our subscribers, particularly those who use it in setting business strategies. A goal we set for the coming third edition is to enrich that content and Outsell’s breadth of industry knowledge and perspective will contribute that.”
Bowker, which has produced the report’s extrapolated results based on submitted data since BookStats’ inception, will provide that expertise again. “Our colleagues at Bowker have played a key role in the birth and evolution of BookStats, contributing to its success,” said Tina Jordan, Vice President, AAP. “We are glad to have their insight and skill continuing with us.”
The deadline for submission of publisher data is Thursday, February 28. More information and forms are available here. This year’s BookStats is due to be released in second quarter of 2013.
Since its debut in 2011 (which tracked 2008-2010), BookStats has established itself as the premier annual survey of the US publishing industry, uniquely capturing data from nearly 2000 publishers of all sizes, types and geographies. The report’s cube structure examines publishers’ net revenue and units by both book category and format; upon its release, it was the first major study of the digital transformation in US book publishing. An added bonus to this year’s edition will be tracking of all five years it has covered.
