Subscription Platform Playster Launches in U.S.
Playster, which announced in October that it would be coming to the U.S. this year, has officially launched its multimedia subscription platform for U.S. users. The service offers unlimited access to content including books, audiobooks, video games, music, movies, and TV shows. Playster is making a big push to enter the U.S. market, offering users who subscribe to the service for a full year a free tablet and headphones. The annual subscription costs $24.95 per month.
This is significant news for U.S. book publishers. With platforms such as Oyster shuttering, and new proprietary subscription services being launched by publishers like Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the future of ebook and audiobook subscription has become less certain. For those who fear that Amazon may come to dominate the subscription space with Kindle Unlimited, Playster’s entry may be welcome news. Some publishers, on the other hand, still have concerns that subscription devalues the price of book and could eat into overall sales.
So far, large publishers including HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Findaway have made their titles available on Playster.
