The June Issue of Book Business Magazine is live — in print, online and in digital edition.
June 5, 2013

The new edition of Book Business magazine should be on its way to you — and can also be accessed online, in a full-featured digital edition or via your iPad through our app— was a lot of fun for us to put together. We've got an interview with Matthew Quick, author of The Silver Linings Playbook. We talk to Matt about the publicity process for his debut novel that was adapted into the Academy Award-winning film. We've also got a piece from one of our personal heroes, the great Bill Kasdorf, that demystifies the EPUB 3 ebook file format and helps ensure you're putting it to its best use.

Current state of formats and platforms
April 3, 2013

Remember the old days when PDF was pretty much the only way to distribute content and those PDFs were read on computer screens? PDF still lives, of course, but now we're also faced with offering content in mobi and EPUB formats for consumption on a variety of platforms and devices.

SPi Global released a free whitepaper this week that covers the current state of formats and platforms. It's called Demystifying the King: Making Content Available to All and you can download it here.

Pages of "hardcore adult pornography" have been discovered in a children's book published to raise money for charity following a printing error
March 19, 2013

Author Adrian Bailey has asked anyone who has bought a hardback copy of his debut novel Otherworld to contact him after discovering that pages of pornography were accidentally printed inside. Mr Bailey, 46, personally paid for the printing of 2,500 hardback copies of his book, with all proceeds going to children's hospice Rebecca House. At the book launch in 2011, 800 copies of Otherworld were bought, and some 3,000 books have been sold since. But it became clear that the books had not been proofread…

The publishing industry has a problem, and EPUB is not the solution
February 26, 2013

Ebooks and EPUB are to the publishing industry what Blu-Ray is to the movie industry: a solution to yesterday’s problem made irrelevant by broader change in the industry. Both have a couple of years left in them, and there’s good money to be made while the kinks get worked out from the alternatives, but the way the wind is blowing is clear.

Whenever someone proposes EPUB as a solution, ask yourself a question: what’s the problem they’re trying to solve?

Past is Prologue: At TOC, a Tempest of paradigm-challenging ideas on what an ebook can be and do
February 14, 2013

O wonder! How many goodly books are there here! How beauteous publishing is! I attended the O’Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing conference this past Tuesday and learned  about a topic that captivates me: new forms that books are able to take when they are conceived as ebooks. There is so much creative work being done in this area that I often want to hold it up to show those who think we are an industry in turmoil. An industry in transition, yes, but with many bright minds at work moving us in exciting new directions.
