For years, JK Rowling absolutely refused to offer an ebook version of the Harry Potter books, claiming that doing so would lead to piracy. As we pointed out at the time, that was ridiculous, because the books were already widely available in unauthorized forms online, and putting legitimate versions up wouldn't change that -- it would just allow people who wanted to pay to do so.
