Press Release: Association of American Publishers Announces 38th Annual PROSE Awards Call for Entries
WASHINGTON (September 17, 2013)- The Professional and Scholarly Publishing (PSP) Division of the Association of American Publishers (AAP) has announced the call for entries for this year's American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Awards. Now in its 38th year, the awards recognize books, journals and electronic products that contribute to professional and scholarly publishing, while also maintaining the highest editorial and design standards. The Call for Entries form is available online and submissions will be accepted through November 1, 2013.
"We are very excited to kick off what we fondly call 'PROSE Awards season'," said PROSE Awards Chairman John A. Jenkins, president and publisher emeritus of CQ Press. "Each year we are surprised and awed by the variety, vibrancy and quality of entries and are looking forward to the high-caliber of submissions for this year."
Book submission categories for this year's PROSE Awards include: humanities, reference works, physical sciences and mathematics, social sciences, as well as biological and life sciences. E-products and electronic platforms with multiple components, meanwhile, can compete for best in humanities, best multidiscipline platform, best in physical sciences and mathematics, best in biological and life sciences, and best in social sciences. New this year, e-products and electronic platforms can also compete for best app. Journals may be entered in print or electronic formats.
The PROSE Awards judging process takes place over a two-month period during which time each category judge ranks his or her favorite submissions based on content, design, and contribution to the field. The full judging panel then convenes in New York City to present and defend their choices, ultimately choosing the winner of each category. From those winners, five "best of" distinctions are awarded.
Only one PROSE prize winner, however, receives the prestigious R.R. Hawkins Award, which recognizes scholarly works in all disciplines of the humanities and sciences.
"Our goal, particularly with the R.R. Hawkins Award, is to choose the publication that has or will have the greatest impact on its field," said Jenkins. "Previous winners of the R.R. Hawkins Award have been truly influential works that shaped their respective industries and either broached a previously unexplored topic or shed a new light on existing research."
To qualify, books, journals and e-products submitted for this year's PROSE Awards must be published by a member company of PSP, AAP, or the Association of American University Presses (AAUP). All divisions of AAP are eligible-including the new PreK-12 Learning Group, formerly the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP)-as well as any non-AEP member publisher who participated in the 2013 AEP Awards.
Winners will be announced at the PROSE Awards Luncheon at the PSP Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. on February 6, 2014 and will be broadcast via live webcast.
