HIMSS Debuts iPad App for Access to Fast-Growing eBook Store
NEW YORK, July 19, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), a cause-based not-for-profit organization focused on the optimal use of information technology in the healthcare industry, has introduced an app for the Apple iPad that delivers convenient access to its newly released library of eBooks.
The iPad app was developed by Impelsys, HIMSS's eBooks technology partner and a global leader in providing electronic content delivery solutions, leveraging Impelsys' iOS delivery module within its iPublishCentral software platform.
The free app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store:
In February 2012, HIMSS launched its first eBook store, allowing customers to browse and purchase full-text, online access to HIMSS titles. The eBooks sold on this site are fully searchable and can be downloaded instantly to desktop computers, laptops and iPads. Both members and non-members of HIMSS can purchase eBooks from the HIMSS store; new titles are being added to the online catalog on a regular basis.
"This new app for the iPad allows users to go directly into the HIMSS eBook store and begin checking out our available titles right away," said Nancy Vitucci, senior manager of publications for HIMSS. "The Impelsys team built the app in a very user-friendly way so that our customers can browse for eBooks by category and search for them based on various keywords. Once they've found the specific titles they wish to purchase, they can download the full eBooks, read them at their own pace, add bookmarks, take their own personal notes about what they learned, and much more."
According to Vitucci, there are already 29 eBooks available for immediate download onto the iPad and the association expects to roll out additional titles throughout the second half of 2012.
HIMSS eBooks are available on a wider variety of topics in healthcare information technology and management systems, including:
- Research
- Ambulatory care
- Clinical and nursing informatics
- Interoperability
- Management, strategy and finance
- Professional certification
"The eBook revolution continues to accelerate, with sales data from this year showing that American publishers are now earning more customers from eBook sales than they are from hardcover book sales, and the iPad has managed to draw in a new crowd of tech savvy readers who want devices that offer them more options," said Sameer Shariff, chief executive officer of Impelsys. "This new app for HIMSS allows health information professionals to quickly obtain the content they need directly onto their iPads and it helps the organization make their valuable content accessible to members and non-members alike from any location in the world."
