This week IREX Technologies revealed the latest development in their collection of e-readers: the IREX DR800SG. Highlights include an 8.1-inch, interactive touchscreen, multi-mode 3G wireless connectivity and the ability to purchase and download content directly to the device. In an increasingly competitive market, IREX is offering more consumer-friendly design, easier navigation tools and support of multiple content formats without proprietary restrictions.
The IREX DR800SG also has some novelty. It will be the first e-reader to utilize Qualcomm's Gobi™ technology, giving users global connectivity
and the freedom to choose when and where they acquire content, like from Barnes & Noble's eBookstore, which is included in the device. Additionally, it is projected that users will be able to download content while abroad starting next year.
"The availability of new devices that empower consumers with the freedom to purchase content from a variety of sources will be a major driver to the success of the digital publishing market,” says Allen Weiner, research vice president, Gartner Inc. “Sleek devices with consumer-friendly features – including the capability to purchase content on the go – that support open e-book standards will introduce the e-book experience to an entirely new generation of readers. Publishers, who have been on the sidelines waiting
for market maturity, will now be inspired to become e-reader evangelists.”
The IREX DR800SG will be available for $399.99 at select Best Buy stores in October 2009, and is scheduled for launch in Europe in early 2010.
