While their customers may argue over whether it's better to be "a Mac" or "a PC" in a long-running series of TV commercials, Microsoft and Apple now are arguing over a trademark. According to an article on MobileMarketer.com, Microsoft has filed an objection to Apple's application to trademark the term "app store" for its exclusive use, claiming it is a generic term. If Microsoft is successful in derailing Apple's trademark application, "then anyone selling applications could call the virtual storefront an app store," the article stated.
