The book scanning model originated in Japan in 2010, where many people began DIY book scanning due to very limited shelf space in homes and the popularity of the iPad and other tablet devices. In Japan, the term ‘JISUI’ (literally meaning to cook for oneself) became the common name for DIY book scanning. JISUI is a type of book scanning called “destructive” book scanning where the book is actually cut and then fed into a scanner. As more people desired to have their book collection in Japan digitized, the market for book scanning services grew substantially.
