OUP President Expresses Support for Google Book Settlement

Oxford University Press President Tim Barton has written a thoughtful piece for The Chronicle of Higher Education in support of the Google Book Settlement, while acknowledging its numerous flaws and suggesting improvements be made.

He points to a recent essay assignment for a Columbia University classics class in which 70 percent of the students cited a book published in 1900, despite the book having not been on any reading list. The full text of the book (published in 1900) was available on Google Book Search, while modern works are not.
