“If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.”
It starts with a girl. With divorced parents split between two coasts, a nanny-turned-stepmom, finding love, losing it, and beginning all over again, the girl has her work cut out for her. Author, Ali Berlinski, navigates growing pains all twenty-somethings will relate to with complex family dynamics that give even the Sopranos a run for their money.
From Pubslush Press, “the people’s publisher”, comes the first title in their groundbreaking debut, a beautiful mess. Berlinski bravely walks readers through a compilation of short stories starring her own family where “things always come in twos,” and coping with “a name that screams, I’m white and a face that screams I give manicures!”
.
From becoming the girlfriend of a celebrity to divorcing her birth mother to her sister’s rollercoaster ride with bipolar disorder, Berlinski’s narrative is part memoir, part survival guide, and part love story. With her wry sense of humor and frank honesty, a beautiful mess is a tour-de-force of the challenges young people face and a deeply inspiring story about Berlinski’s choice to embrace, rather than run, from it all.
This book will thrill fans of Ausgusten Burrough’s Running with Scissors, and the cynics among us will appreciate the Sedaris-esque tone threaded through every trial Berlinski tackles head-on. Selected by hundreds of users in the Pubslush community, join the revolution, learn from your mistakes, and fall in love with the beautiful mess.
