BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Books-A-Million Inc., the Birmingham-based chain of 253 bookstores, will dip its toe in the print-on-demand book business and install on-demand hardware in a Maine store and a store to be named later, the company announced today.

On Demand Books LLC’s Espresso Book Machines, which today are located in about 70 college and independent bookstores – but not at major chains – can print self-published books, photo books and major titles from publishers including Harper Collins, Penguin, Macmillan, McGraw Hill, Random House and Simon & Schuster.

On October 17, the Sacramento Public Library installed the Espresso Book Machine (r), a Xerox Solution (EBM), in its Central Branch location downtown.

Local readers and writers packed into Politics & Prose on Wednesday night for the official launch of “Opus,” Washington, DC’s first print-on-demand Espresso book machine. It’s one of only a handful operating in independent bookstores worldwide.

Baker is the first major Christian publisher to make available substantially their entire paperback list to the EBM network. This agreement will enable Baker to reach more readers both in the existing Christian market and in broader trade and academic bookstores that are equipped with an Espresso Book Machine.

Darien Library and On Demand Books will be introducing an Espresso Book Machine® (EBM) at Darien Library’s Annual Meeting. It will make available to the Library’s patrons and community print-on-demand purchase of millions of public-domain and out-of-print volumes.

The American Booksellers Association (ABA) and On Demand Books (ODB), the maker of the Espresso Book Machine(r) (EBM), have entered a joint marketing agreement whereby the ABA will market the EBM to member bookstores and help permission publisher titles to the EBM sales channel.
