A story out of the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology adds another dimension to the ebook/print dynamic, reporting that backlit tablets aid patients suffering from visual problems to read comfortably:

"Overall, users with moderate vision loss increased their reading speed by 15 words per minute on average. Patients with the poorest vision –– 20/40 or worse in both eyes –– show the most improvement using backlit tablets compared to print."

The study suggests that use of such devices could help those patients achieve near-normal levels for pleasure reading, which is astounding. —Brian Howard
