One of the most experimental and exciting areas of book publishing right now, especially in the trade market, is direct-to-consumer marketing. It's a topic that has been discussed extensively here on Book Business, but it's worth a deeper dive as all of the Big Five and many mid-size and small publishers have launched experiments in this field. Book Business had the opportunity to hear three forward-thinking leaders from Perseus Books Group, Hachette, and Rodale Books on the topic at our Book Business Live event in March. They offered a variety of strategies to driving greater sales, but the big lesson was that D2C marketing is really about content marketing and relationship building.

NEW YORK, NY-May 18 2015-Rodale Inc., the world's leading healthy lifestyle media company, announced today that Gail Gonzales has been named VP Associate Publisher, Trade Books effective June 15. In this position Gonzales will work to develop Rodale's publishing program, as well as new products and initiatives with current and perspective authors and brands; cultivate synergy with Rodale magazines, integrated marketing team, and direct-to-consumer books group; and work closely with Macmillan. Reporting to Gonzales will be the Sales and Marketing departments. Gonzales will report to Rodale Books SVP Publisher Mary Ann Naples.

The team at Book Business recently hosted a one-day, invite-only event in NY. I had the pleasure of attending as well as moderating the first panel of the day, "Transforming Your Company for the New Era of Book Publishing."

The day was filled with highly engaging discussions featuring panelists from McGraw-Hill, Pearson, Hachette, Cengage, Perseus, Rodale, HarperCollins, and Scribd. Here are a few of the most interesting points I took away from the event:

Feb 08, 2013 Rodale Inc, a publisher of healthy lifestyle books, revealed that it has appointed Mary Ann Naples as VP/Publisher, Rodale Books and a member of the company's senior management team, with effect from 4 March 2013.

In her position as VP/Publisher of the Books Group, the company said Naples will oversee its North American trade and direct book publishing operations, including editorial, marketing and distribution channels, reporting to Maria Rodale, chairman and CEO, Rodale Inc. She will also collaborate with the company's brands, including international editions, in order to further expand the range of the Rodale Books list into new areas.
