It’s official: I am a book groupie. I realized this last night as I watched the live stream of the National Book Awards presentation, and became teary over poet Mary Szybist’s acceptance speech. I went into this business in the first place because of one basic belief: books can change lives. So let’s hear it for the all the wonderful authors of potentially life changing books in the hall last night at the National Book Foundation’s annual gala!
Wonderful Doris Lessing has died. You never expect such rock-solid features of the literary landscape to simply vanish. It's a shock.
I first encountered Lessing on a park bench in Paris in 1963. My pal Alison Cunningham and I had been barred from our hostel during the day, so Alison was soothing my prostrate self by reading from The Golden Notebook, which was all the rage among such as us. Who knew we were reading a book that was soon to become iconic?
Last week in NYC, about 160 people attended the Content Marketing Master Class, which Publishing Executive co-hosted, along with our sister publication Target Marketing and content marketing guru Joe Pulizzi’s Content Marketing Institute. Some fabulous and energetic speakers such as Robert Rose addressed in specific and practical ways: What can we do to make a change in our business so that we can start using content marketing?
Some of you, over the last week, may have noticed me proclaiming the coming of the future… The Futurist Panel, that is. Yesterday we convened the first of what will be a monthly gathering of forward-thinking publishing experts. In a wide-ranging 30-minute conversation, this insightful group began some interesting inquiries into how publishing has changed and will continue to morph, and how its future identity might shape up.
This weekend, I had the pleasure of addressing New Generation Publishing's Self-publishing Summit. The conference was laid out to take you through the process of self-publishing, with panels that took you in order through a general survey, editing, production, and finally marketing. I had been asked to talk on the first panel, and then the summary panel at the end, so whilst other panelists came and went, I got a fascinating insight into the whole picture.

Turk read an average of 7.5-8 books per year, according to the Federation of Professional Associations of Publishers (YAYFED) Chairman Bayram Murat, who always ensures his attendance as a speaker at the annual Istanbul Book Fair.

Stuart Kelly is a literary supplicant; he has gladly given his existence over to the book gods. He has read a book a day since he was 15, written two of his own, reviewed professionally his entire adult life, and cherry-picked the best young British novelists for Granta magazine. Two weeks before we meet to sample some of Edinburgh's strongest caffeinated drinks, came his professional highlight. At a ceremony in London's Guildhall, he, along with three other judges, picked the winner of the Man Booker Prize
