I am a Book Groupie
November 21, 2013

It’s official: I am a book groupie. I realized this last night as I watched the live stream of the National Book Awards presentation, and became teary over poet Mary Szybist’s acceptance speech. I went into this business in the first place because of one basic belief: books can change lives.  So let’s hear it for the all the wonderful authors of potentially life changing books in the hall last night at the National Book Foundation’s annual gala!

Doris Lessing: A Model for Every Writer Coming from the Back of Beyond
November 18, 2013

Wonderful Doris Lessing has died. You never expect such rock-solid features of the literary landscape to simply vanish. It's a shock.

I first encountered Lessing on a park bench in Paris in 1963. My pal Alison Cunningham and I had been barred from our hostel during the day, so Alison was soothing my prostrate self by reading from The Golden Notebook, which was all the rage among such as us. Who knew we were reading a book that was soon to become iconic?

The Self-Publishing Conversation Is Changing: Report from the 2013 Self-publishing Summit
November 11, 2013

This weekend, I had the pleasure of addressing New Generation Publishing's Self-publishing Summit. I had been asked to talk on the first panel, and then the summary panel at the end, so whilst other panelists came and went, I got a fascinating insight into the whole picture.

Stuart Kelly is a literary supplicant; he has gladly given his existence over to the book gods. He has read a book a day since he was 15, written two of his own, reviewed professionally his entire adult life, and cherry-picked the best young British novelists for Granta magazine. Two weeks before we meet to sample some of Edinburgh's strongest caffeinated drinks, came his professional highlight. At a ceremony in London's Guildhall, he, along with three other judges, picked the winner of the Man Booker Prize
