Earlier this year, HarperCollins also was named Publishing Innovator of the Year by Book Business magazine. Friedman accepted the award at a special reception held during the 2008 Publishing Business Conference & Expo.
It has not been officially reported why Friedman decided to leave her position or what her next career move will be, but speculation and rumors already have begun circulating. Gawker.com reports this morning that Friedman first discussed her departure with Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corp., which owns HarperCollins, two days after he had already offered her job to Murray, indicating that Murdoch wanted her out.
