This week's mediaIDEAS onPoint chart shows the percent of online users in 2010-2011 using the Internet for e-mail, search, reading news, buying products, content or services, and visiting/interacting on social network sites. Recent data from The Pew Research Center shows that in 2005 68% of users read news online, 58% used search engines, 93% sent or read emails, and 61% made online purchases. In 2005 only 11% used social network sites.
While e-mail use has not changed much, search, accessing news, and online buying have grown. But the biggest growth is in social media, use of which has increased nearly six-fold over the course of 5-6 years. How are you using social media to empower and redefine the print or digital reading experience?
