Safari Gives Readers Short Cut to Content
In an industry where the time it takes to produce a book is quickly becoming a liability, one media company has found a way around the time crunch.
Safari Books—which is jointly owned by O’Reilly Media and Pearson Technology Group—announced on Tuesday the launch of Short Cuts, a new subscription feature to its Web site that puts information into the hands of readers before an entire printed book is even completed.
Designed with emerging technology subjects in mind, the company said the move was one that “would help move their service beyond books.”
“We are committed to providing content that is timely and appropriate for our users,” said Debra Woods, vice president of marketing for Safari Books Online. “We realize this kind of material often doesn’t make it into a printed book as quickly as our users need to learn about it. That’s why Safari Books Online is embracing new formats like Short Cuts and Rough Cuts - products custom designed for the online medium.”
Users are able to view the work of O’Reilly and Pearson Technology Group’s stable of authors, which once was created exclusively for books, at a much quicker rate. Featured as short documents, usually fewer than 100 pages in length, the works are designed exclusively for the Web.
According to Safari Books Online, Short Cuts articles are still held up to high editorial standards.
