Sharp Independent at HarperCollins Unveils Books Bound for the Big Screen
At the Sundance Film Festival last month, Sharp Independent at HarperCollins—the partnership formed in October 2007 between the independent film production company and the book publisher—announced several book titles optioned for film adaptation. Sharp Independent at HarperCollins was created to develop and produce motion pictures based on HarperCollins’ titles. It works with authors and their representatives to acquire the film rights for books from future, current and existing backlist adult titles.
The titles that were announced for film adaptation are: “The Queen of Babble Series,” by Meg Cabot; “Live From Cape Canaveral” by Jay Barbree; “The Space Between Us,” by Thrity Umrigar; “The Cure for Anything Is Salt Water,” by Mary South; and “Northline,” by Willy Vlautin. These titles join “Now You See Him,” by Eli Gottlieb, which was announced by Sharp Independent at HarperCollins as a book-to-film acquisition last month.
“The selection of books optioned demonstrates the breadth of our lists. Our relationship with Sharp Independent offers increased exposure and visibility, not just for our best-selling franchises like ‘Queen of Babble,’ but for newer authors like Willy Vlautin,” says Michael Morrison, president and group publisher, Harper/Morrow. Morrison also oversees the Sharp Independent at HarperCollins venture.
