The second-annual SustainPrint Leadership Awards have been announced, recognizing book and magazine publishers for their outstanding achievements in environmental sustainability. Scholastic Inc. and Chelsea Green Publishing are the 2008 winners in the book category. The awards are presented by Book Business and Publishing Executive magazines and SustainPrint.com—which provides information on environmental sustainability in printing and publishing.
The awards were presented on Monday evening at an awards reception during the Publishing Business Conference & Expo at the New York Marriott Marquis (http://www.PublishingBusiness.com).
Scholastic Inc. won in the “Newcomer of the Year” category for book publishers and Chelsea Green won in the “Longtime Leader” category for book publishers.
In March, Scholastic made the largest-ever commitment to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper in a single book: Sixty-five percent of the paper used in the first U.S. printing of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” was FSC-certified. Additionally, all 12 million copies of the U.S. edition’s initial print run were printed on paper that contained a minimum of 30 percent post-consumer-waste (PCW) fiber. Two months ago, Scholastic also announced a major corporate sustainability policy.
Founded in 1984, Chelsea Green prints all of its books on recycled, PCW paper. It publishes approximately 30 new titles a year, with print runs ranging from 4,000 to 50,000, and a backlist of more than 300 titles. Chelsea Green also is a founding member of nonprofit organization the Green Press Initiative and, in 2007, was a key sponsor of a sustainability conference held at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.
Every Day With Rachael Ray and Nickelodeon Magazine earned this year’s SustainPrint Leadership Awards among magazine publishers.
