For years, it was a schedule as predictable as a calendar: novelists who specialized in mysteries, thrillers and romance would write one book a year, output that was considered not only sufficient, but productive.

But the e-book age has accelerated the metabolism of book publishing. Authors are now pulling the literary equivalent of a double shift, churning out short stories, novellas or even an extra full-length book each year.

Random House Children’s Books will publish 13 of beloved author Judy Blume’s classic books for young readers as ebooks, it was announced today by Beverly Horowitz, VP & Publisher, Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers. Blume’s stories have entertained, informed, and generated discussions among readers about universal issues for more than 40 years, and now the legions of Blume fans who have grown up reading her books in print, as well as a whole new generation of readers, will be able to read them electronically. The new ebook editions will be available beginning March 21 in the U.S. and Canada, wherever Random House ebooks are sold.

Random House Children’s will release the second e-book original from New York Times bestselling author Michael Scott, "Billy the Kid and the Vampyres of Vegas: A Lost Story from the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel." The story is intended whet fans' appetites for The Enchantress (May 2012), the  final book in Scott's six-part series, The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel.

Year-to-date sales of U.S. trade e-books sold through wholesale channels show an increase of more than 204 percent over sales through June 2009.

For the first time in the publisher's history, Random House Children's Books has released an e-book of an original, not-previously-published work.
