Barnes and Noble Raises Member Discounts
For an annual fee of $25, members of Barnes and Noble’s frequent customer club have received discounts off the list price of books sold at the retailer since it began the program in 2000. Starting this week, the largest bookseller in the world announced it would make those perks even better for its regular customers.
Card-carrying members of the retailer’s Members program will now receive a full 40 percent off the list price on hardcover fiction and nonfiction bestsellers, 20 percent off the list price of all other adult hardcover book, and 10 percent off everything else in the store, the company announced Monday.
“Just in time for the holiday season, we’ve enhanced the program by lowering prices to our Members,” said Steve Riggio, chief executive officer of Barnes & Noble.
Borders, the second largest bookseller, has a similar retail program. Unlike its chief rival Barnes and Noble, Borders’ discount program is free. It does not feature ongoing additional reductions on the price of books, but rather rewards through e-mail coupons and accrued discounts.
