The Publishing Business Group Announces Winners of the 2013 Publishing Innovator of the Year Award
Scientific, Technical & Medical:
American Physical Society (APS) is a non-‐profit membership organization that works to improve the knowledge of physics through its research journals, scientific meetings, and education, outreach, advocacy, and international activities. Recently, APS announced that it would launch a new journal of applied physics, which will allow APS to reach out to a broader community and expand its scope of research. APS has also announced that it will be collaborating with the federal government and journal publishers to create an online platform, The Clearinghouse for the Open Research of the United States (CHORUS), that gives scientists access to publications from federally funded research. In addition to these ventures, APS has a program called The APS Bridge Program (APS-‐BP) that works to help increase the number of minority students who receive PhDs in physics, and in late June, APS-‐BP hosted a conference which included multiple programs and organizations that share a similar goal. Though this program is in its beginning stages, it has already succeeded in placing at least 14 students into physics bridge programs or directly into graduate programs. The American Physical Society is committed to furthering the knowledge of physics, and it continues to work to achieve this goal.
