IPA Endorses Thema

International Publishers Association has officially announced its support of Thema, the new international subject code standard for books and ebooks.

Book Manufacturing And Hardcover Binding Associations Merge to Better Serve Members And Their Customers

On December 6, 2013, the Board of Directors for both the Book Manufacturers' Institute (BMI), and Hardcover Binders International/Library Binding Institute (HBI/LBI) approved a "Memorandum Of Understanding", the final agreement confirming the merger of the two associations. Effective January 1, 2014, HBI/LBI will be merged into BMI. HBI/LBI will continue to exist as the Library Binding Council within BMI.

Wiley’s Inaugural Alexis Walker Award Honors Family Studies Research

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Introduces Only All-In-One Reentry Curriculum Designed for Correctional Facilities

Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced its new Reentry Prerelease Program designed specifically for correctional facility education centers. According to 2011 research from the Pew Center for the States, four in ten released prisoners will violate terms of probation or commit new crimes and be reincarcerated within three years. Nine 'Best Awards' for HarperCollins Christian Publishing

HarperCollins Christian Publishing won a total of nine 2013 Christian Retailing's Best Awards at this year's annual International Christian Retailing Sales conference in St. Louis, Mo. 

In the Bible category, the Company was honored with three of the four awards: "Story for Children Bible" in the NIrV translation (Zondervan) in Children's; "NIV Women's Devotional Bible" (Zondervan) in Devotional/Study; and "Extreme Teen Study Bible" (Thomas Nelson) in Teen.

U.S. Publishers See Ongoing Sales Growth in Print and E-format Books Worldwide, According to 2013 Industry Export Sales Report

English-language books from US Trade sector publishers continue to flourish worldwide, especially in Europe and Asia and in expanding online international retail sales channels, according to the second annual Association of American Publishers (AAP) Export Sales Report being released today. The report also shows particular worldwide growth in US-published, English-language fiction for Adults and Young Adults.

The report examines US Trade sector (publishers of fiction and non-fiction) 2012 net sales revenue from international markets and includes data from all major consumer publishing houses.

Random House, Inc. Relaunches TasteBook; Publisher Redesigns Online Food Community and Lowers Price of Custom Cookbooks

Random House, Inc., announces the relaunch of TasteBook, the online food community and custom cookbook creation site. As the newest member of the publisher’s consumer websites, TasteBook was acquired by Random House late last year. Since then, TasteBook has undergone a major redesign and change in price structure. The new website features a personalized homepage, which allows members to instantly follow and connect with friends while sharing recipes. The homepage also includes a “Recipe of the Day” feature and “TasteBook Recommendations” that share even more recipe ideas with members. TasteBook also introduces a new price model for custom cookbooks, lowering the price of a 25-page recipe book by 30 percent to $24.95. Additional recipes can be purchased for $.20 each and added to the book at any time.

The University of North Carolina Press Receives Grant from Mellon Foundation

The University of North Carolina Press has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York to explore the obstacles and opportunities facing university presses as they seek to incorporate various forms of digital publishing. The funding will be used to study expanded publication models that can successfully and sustainably connect the emerging forms of scholarship that rely on digital and computer-based methods with the book and journal formats long associated with university press publishing.

Rittenhouse Award to Jack Shoemaker, Co-founder, Editorial Director and Vice President of Counterpoint Press. The PubWest Board of Directors selected Shoemaker in recognition of his extraordinary career and how his lifetime of work has shaped and inspired the book publishing community.
