Stephen Rubin has been named president and publisher of Macmillan-owned Henry Holt and Co., according to an Associated Press (AP) report. Rubin, who resigned last month from Random House Inc., will begin his new position Nov. 2.
At the time of his resignation, Rubin served as publisher-at-large at Random House. Previously, he was publisher of Random House's Doubleday Publishing Group, which was dismantled last December during a reorganization by CEO Markus Dohle. At Doubleday, Rubin published best-selling authors such as John Grisham, Pat Conroy and Dan Brown.
"Throughout my career, I have always strived to publish those exceptional books that bridge the gap between commerce and literature," Rubin said in a statement issued by Macmillan. "I believe that Holt is the perfect place to do this."
"We're moving Holt from being sort of a midlist-driven, serious publisher to being pretty front and center," Macmillan CEO John Sargent said, according to the AP. "To do that and do that quickly, you need someone who comes from that background. … We're looking for Steve to bring in commercial, repeat authors, which is the kind of thing Holt needs."
Holt's current president and publisher, Dan Farley, also has been running the Macmillan Children's Publishing Group. Farley will continue in his role with the Children's Publishing Group once Rubin takes over at Holt.
