Pearson's Plug & Play Platform Supported by Apigee Enterprise
PALO ALTO, CA, May 9, 2012—Apigee, the API company, today announced that Pearson -- the world's leading learning company -- runs its Plug & Play developer platform on the Apigee Enterprise API management platform. Launched last September, the Pearson Plug & Play initiative delivers APIs (application programming interfaces) that provide developers with access to award-winning Pearson content for exploring, testing and integrating into innovative applications. Pearson is leveraging Apigee's API management platform and developer tools to manage growth, understand usage, and drive developer adoption of Pearson APIs.
"The power of the software development community has been proven by social media companies like Facebook and Google, and it's now being harnessed by a range of leading businesses such as Pearson," said Chet Kapoor, Apigee CEO. "The Plug & Play platform makes it straightforward for developers to tap Pearson's rich content and services, and in turn deliver this content to a broad market via third-party applications."
"Pearson understands that it can release the untapped potential of its data by opening up and working more closely with the developer community, and Apigee is helping us do that," said Diana Stepner, Head of Future Technologies at Pearson. "Through Plug & Play we can take our content to new audiences through new channels, while increasing innovation as developers bring new thinking and ideas to the table."
Pearson's businesses include consumer publishing through the DK brand, educational materials and services, and business information through the Financial Times Group. The aim of the Pearson Plug & Play initiative is to make Pearson data available for developers to unleash their creativity to develop new products and new ways of using, displaying and blending Pearson content. Today, developers can build apps with Pearson content via the following APIs:
• DK Eyewitness Guide APIs provide access to information about the top sites and attractions in nine cities (London, Barcelona, Berlin, New York City, Berlin, Paris, Prague, Rome, Venice and Washington) including hotels, restaurants, bars and shops, plus insider tips. All content is entirely geocoded, including tags that include details such as address, phone number, opening times, website, and transport information.
• The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English API provides access to the flagship Longman dictionary. It is a best-selling title in both print and digital formats and was voted one of the best English dictionaries by iPhone app users.
• The FT Press API opens up essential insights from high caliber business books and original writings by leading business thinkers, in a bite-sized electronic format.
• The Pearson Kitchen Manager is a valuable resource for food enthusiasts and chefs alike, featuring a vast collection of recipes from bestselling Pearson textbooks of top culinary schools. Pearson Kitchen Manager allows cooks to maximize the value of their recipe content.
