What's F.A. Davis Doing Right?

It was known as the Green Room, a relic of 1960s-era decorating—felt walls and all—that served for decades as prime meeting space on the first floor of Philadelphia health sciences book publisher F.A. Davis Co. While nobody mourned its passing when it was finally renovated two years ago, it was believed that the demise of the groovy grotto warranted the creation of a commemorative plaque, handed out around the office at the holidays. Amid photos and an actual mounted green wall swatch was engraved a promise to hereby “stop meeting like this.”

This year's Gold Ink Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet, produced by Book Business and Publishing Executive magazines, was held Monday at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Chicago, Ill., during the Print 09 show. For the first time in the awards' 22-year history, all of the Gold Ink Gold Award winners were displayed at the banquet, and each guest was given the opportunity to cast one vote as to which Gold Award winner should receive the "People's Choice Award" for outstanding printing.

Audiobook publishers can hear the train coming and are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, says Anthony Goff, president of the Audio Publishers Association (APA), and publisher director of Hachette Audio and Digital Media. Goff believes that the recent, significant decline in audiobook sales—the Association of American Publishers (AAP) reported a 47.1-percent decrease in audiobook sales from March 2008 to March 2009—will likely result in audiobook publishers stepping aboard the train and steering ahead on the changing tracks.
