Deconstructing Distribution
In its ground-breaking 2005 study “Under the Radar,” BISG mailed a survey to the 85,000 publishers in Bowker’s November 2004 database and reported that there were 62,815 active publishers (which excluded publishers reporting no revenues). Of this number, there were 46,860 publishers with less than $50,000 in annual revenues.
Eugene G. Schwartz is editor at large for ForeWord Reviews, an industry observer and an occasional columnist for Book Business magazine. In an earlier career, he was in the printing business and held production management positions at Random House, Prentice-Hall/Goodyear and CRM Books/Psychology Today. A former PMA (IBPA) board member, he has headed his own publishing consultancy, Consortium House.
